Sparkling Bourbon + Basil Lemonade


It's been the Summer of cocktails for me.  When my family came down to visit a couple of weekends ago they asked if I just liked to say the word "cocktail".  I then realized at any chance I was suggesting cocktails, if we should make cocktails, which cocktail sounded the craziest on the menu, and so on. I can only assume I talk about them so often because I really do love them.


Robert's inspiration behind this concoction was the weird Summer weather. It cools off and heats back up within a couple of days and it's made the typical cravings different than usual. Last week as it crawled back into the 90's, lemonade finally seemed like a good idea. Shandy's have been in the usual rotation, with homemade ones being my personal preference (every time I try a bottled one the proportions seem off), and I was happy to try a lemonade cocktail sans beer. This is a strong one, and if you're feeling like it's a little too boozey for you I would just increase the amount of simple syrup.


Sparkling Bourbon + Basil Lemonade

makes 1 cocktail
2 oz fresh squeezed lemon juice
1 oz simple syrup
2 oz bourbon whiskey
sparkling water, or club soda
basil leaves

In a rocks glass over ice, combine lemon juice, simple syrup and bourbon. Top with club soda or sparkling water and garnish with fresh basil leaves. Stir to combine.
